The departure of Javier Pérez Garrido as composer in residence at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls came to the end with a concert whose program included the American premiere of the pasodoble Víctor Barrio. The UWRF Symphony Band and her band director Dr. Kristin Thornehoj said goodbye to Javier as well as the audience that attended the concert at the William Abbott Concert Hall.
The participation of the Spanish composer began at the end of the last year and had one of its most important moments during the successful first performance in the United States of the symphonietta Last Day of the Dinosaurs, Op.63. During the 2021-2022 academic year, Javier had the opportunity to work directly with the students of the music department, offering them his personal vision about the performed music compositions as well as collaborating as a teacher in various subjects, specially at the composition and conducting classroom.
For this 2022-2023 season, the American composer Alex Shapiro -one of the most recognized women in current band creation- has just been selected to participate in the oldest residency program for band composers in the United States.
